How to brief materials and performance requirements
An outdoor garment’s performance claims should relate to its selected materials, construction and agreed evidence. Use a project brief to make the requirements specific.

Describe the intended use first
Explain the activity, expected layering and design priorities. Identify which requirements are essential and which are preferences. Give the development team your fabric reference or specification so it can be reviewed against the intended garment.
Name the test method and target
For a requirement such as water resistance, breathability, stretch or colourfastness, state the test method, target and whether it applies to fabric, components or the finished garment. Avoid treating a general fabric description as a verified result for every product.
Review construction alongside fabric
Where seam sealing is required, review fabric and tape compatibility. For insulated garments, confirm synthetic filling type, weight and distribution. For printed swim shorts, review artwork, seams, lining and trims together. Record what needs to be tested or checked.
Agree evidence before making claims
Specify required reports and documentation before production. A recycled-material or certification statement needs evidence applicable to the particular project and supply route. Confirm the wording your brand intends to use and the documentation needed to support it.
